SCHOOL HISTORY / OVERVIEW

"In the IT world it is always important to be one step ahead & as such, we have invested RM 300,000 on a new Games & Programming Studio."

The Information Technology Department was born in July 1991 in Dewan Bandaran, Jalan Padang Kota Lama, Penang, Malaysia. It was set up then with the vision of meeting the urgent demand in our country for competent professionals in the computing and information technology industry. Being one of the first and oldest IT schools in Northern Malaysia, the department has a history of producing a long list of industry-list of industry-ready graduates through its numerous program offering over its 20-year vintage existence.

Its first two computing programs, the KDU Basic Diploma in Computer Studies and Higher Diploma in Computer Studies were launched in July 1991. Upon commencement, the programs gained instant reception from the Penang public simply because they equipped students with excellent theoretical and practical skills in the areas of computing and information technology. In November 2000, the course name was changed from Basic Diploma and Higher Diploma to the KDU Diploma in Computer Studies.

In January 1999, the School started its collaboration with the University of Lincolnshire & Humbershire, UK to offer the KDU-LDH 3+0 validated Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computing & Information Systems. This program was a hi as it allowed students to pursue and complete their foreign undergraduate degrees locally.

To complement its list of academic offerings further, in January 2003 the school started its partnership with one of U.K's leading universities, Northumbria University in offering the B.Sc (Hons) in Computing Studies. This double major 3+0 program offered students a choice of specializations in Software Development /Multimedia or Software Development /Management. KDU Diploma graduates were given advanced standing into the second year of this program. The course was also a hit as it was developed with a strong emphasis on practical work, requiring the use of computer systems which are industry-oriented.

The school's successful academic ventures convinced them to enter a new frontier and in March 2007 they did so by offering the Diploma in Games Technology program. This program, which was developed with strong emphasis on simulation, programming and adventure features, prepares student for employment areas such as entertainment, gaming and multimedia.

Today, the department is led by Ms Amy Leow who is also the Business Development Manager for the School of Engineering, Science and Technology, Most uniquely, she is also a proud KDU Computing School Alumni and has an undeniable passion to continue the proud tradition of the school in the producing industry ready-graduates.
